MLK and 25th // Day 1

Here are a few pictures at the new mural location. More photos and a lo-fi montage of the mural site coming soon, be sure to check back to be amazed by the beauty The Community Rejuvenation Project brings to some of the more grimy parts of town.

Day 1 was mostly filled with sketching out the general ideas and getting to know the people of the community, letting them know What we are doing? and Why we are here?

Martin's first piece

My name is Martin and it was my first time
spray painting by myself and it was kinda hard.
I learned a lot spray painting and I liked it. My fingers kinda
hurt but it was worth the experience I wouldn't mind doing it again though.
I learned how to clean up the lines to make them look better and getting better at spray painting. The things i would have done better was to put more designs in my pieces. Next time i spray paint i hope to have a lot more detail.

DREAM BY BLEST & POPS

Our experince with this project was extrodanary helpful for the family of Mike "DREAM". I, Blest, am good and have been writing graffiti ever since i did my first piece in the 7th grade which was around 2005-06. The other end of the story combines POPS who was my assistent during the whole time i did the DREAM piece. he's been writing since he was in the 6th grade. We did this piece today to honor DREAM and it was also DREAM day all around the world. We got interviewed by MEUT from the famous oakland crew TDK. DREAM was a part of this crew but had a terribele demise in the year 2000. It was a great experince on working on something like this which will only come around once a year. We learned how to combined the colors and what matches with what. we also got a lot of more experince on doing bigger piece from this.

MINI

My name is Jesus. This was my first time doing a piece. It was a cool experience, i got to learn new things. I got to learn that it takes time to do a piece and get it right. Next time i do a piece i want to get the lines more straight and not be messy. The hard part was doing the 3-D and fixing the outline at the end.

Leonardo's First Piece

my name is leonardo

i chose to write east side because i live in the east side of oakland and i wanted to represent were i was from. I also chose this because i think that it is very important to show where i was rased. I felt kind of wierd when i did this because i did not know what to write. And when i was painting it was challenging because i did not plan nothing out and i did not know how to start and it was hard. I felt like i wasted a lot of paint. I also felt bad that i messed up a lot and it came out ugly. I learned that i need to conserve paint and not make a lot of errors and plan out what im going to do. for the next time im going to do something better.

Reflections at the end of the 2.5 hour workshop. (compiled by Karina Gonzalez)

Karina Gonzalez: "I like this class. It was really fun and I learned a lot of new things. I would like to learn more, like take a class to become good, and do my murals around the community. I like it becuase you can express yourself with the paintings. I liked that they let us used the spray paint. I never thought I was going to paint with spray cans. It was hard but fun. We did a nice little mural it wasn't perfect becuase we are beginners but I think it came out nice.
